Plans for the Los Angeles California Temple were announced on March 6, 1937, marking an important step in establishing a temple for the Saints in Southern California.
Ground was broken on September 22, 1951, beginning the construction of what would become one of the Church’s most recognized temples.
On March 11, 1956, President David O. McKay dedicated the temple, opening a new chapter of worship and covenant devotion for Latter-day Saints in the region.
The temple closed in late 2005 for renovation and seismic strengthening, then reopened in 2006 with renewed readiness for the years ahead.
Today, the Los Angeles California Temple continues to bless Southern California as a house of the Lord and a visible reminder of faith in the middle of a great city. The official temple page notes that it serves Latter-day Saints in Southern California.
The Los Angeles Temple is known for its strong, balanced silhouette, tall central spire, and beautifully arranged grounds.
One especially distinctive feature is its angel Moroni statue: the Los Angeles Temple was the second temple to receive one, and the statue was cast in aluminum to comply with Los Angeles building code.
